Carlos Alemán

Carlos E. Alemán (he/him) is the CEO of the Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama (¡HICA!), Alabama's leading nonprofit serving the Latino community. Originally from Nicaragua and raised in San Francisco, he has a profound commitment to supporting immigrant and Latino families. Since stepping into his role at ¡HICA!, the organization has seen measured growth, extending its reach and deepening its impact within the community. Prior to this, Carlos was an assistant professor of history at Samford University, with his studies centered on Latin America, immigration, and race. He is the first Latino elected to public office in Alabama, with a seat on Homewood's City Council. He also holds board positions with several organizations committed to civil rights and community development. His work is inspired by his own immigrant experience, the love for his family – wife Mercedes, their daughter Amelia, and their dog Lulu – and the belief in the potential of every member of his community.
