Thandi Cai

Thandi Cai (they/them) is an artist, graphic designer, and cultural organizer from Memphis, Tennessee. Rooted in their lived experience as a queer, Indonesian-Chinese American in the South, their work explores diasporic identity and imagined futures through community projects, design, performance, fashion, film, and printmaking. Thandi’s practice centers rituals that challenge dominant systems around gender, borders, and capitalism while imagining more just and collective ways of being.  After serving as an education volunteer with the Peace Corps Lesotho, Thandi worked as a teaching artist and collaborator on art and mutual aid projects. They have worked as a creative consultant with organizations across the globe, crafting narrative-focused campaigns and impact initiatives. In 2020, they co-founded the Meng Cheng Artist Collective to support collective artmaking and dialogue in Memphis. They have also collaborated with the Chinese Historical Society of Memphis & the Midsouth on Bluff City Chinese, an award-winning documentary and archival project amplifying the voices of the Chinese diaspora in the South.
